What and Why?

Evaluation in Primary Colours 4 encourages pupils to consider how they are learning and where they need extra help and support. The Revision and evaluation sections after Units 2, 4 and 6 in the Activity Book ask pupils to look back at the language of the previous two units and to reflect on their progress.

Practical ideas

  • Pupils who used Primary Colours 3 will be familiar with the idea of self-evaluation. However, at the beginning, any pupils who have not been introduced to the idea may not take self-evaluation or reflection very seriously. This may be because they don't know how to reflect on their learning or because they don't see its relevance. Give them time in class to reflect on what they are best at and what they are weakest at.
  • At the end of some activities, leave time to ask them to think about how well they have understood the new language and what strategies worked best to help them understand.
  • Encourage pupils to talk about how they learn new grammar and vocabulary. Many pupils think that everybody learns in the same way.
  • Give them some examples from your own life where you have evaluated and reflected.
